+81 is a quarterly visual culture magazine at the intersections of fashion, Art and design. +81 invites leading and emerging creatives to collaborate on each issue. +81 introduces works, thoughts and attitudes created by artist that continue to redefine and transcend artistic boundaries.
In this issue:
We have devoted this entire issue to the creativity of Comme des Garçons, offering our own distinctive introduction to the entrancingly innovative visual world of her iconic DMs, ad imagery, and of course the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between exhibition currently ongoing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This issue will also feature a softcover format in celebration of the 20th anniversary of +81.
Kicking things off is a visit to the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between exhibition with photos from the show arranged in uniquely +81 page layout to convey the style and atmosphere of the space. We have also been to comment on the objective/overview and all nine sections of the exhibition in a guidebook style format complete with maps. Adding to the fun are a few of our favorite fashion images from the official exhibition catalog.
The second feature focuses on the infamous DMs of Comme des Garçons, for which a single artist or creator is chosen each year to have their handiwork arranged or collaged into a unique visual world. We update and re-edit our look at the DMs from 2008 to 2014 that appeared in vol. 66, catching up to the present with those featuring French artist JR (2015), Singapore-based independent visual magazine WERK (2016), and NY academic art lab The
Watermill Center with visual artist Paul Thek (2017).
Wrapping up the issue is a look at the covers of the legendary magazine Six and the treasured advertising visuals Comme des Garçons in collaboration with Tsuguya Inoue.
