Document Journal is a spontaneous labor of love; a beautiful visual stream of consciousness forged by an incredibly talented team. Eash issue’s theme emerges subconsciously from complex collage of documents and their creators. With over 300 pages, this magazine is the only independent semi-annual journal in the U.S., featuring the best of each season in photography and writing.
In this issue:
For Document’s Fall/Winter 2019 issue we explore the difference that people can make when they ask the world’s oldest question: Why? Why this way and not that way? As we illustrate in a series of conversations and features, this is true not only of climate change, but of sexual identity and gender orientation, education, architecture, representation, and even currency.
Document No. 15 features eight limited-edition covers including Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo, Inez & Vinoodh and Grace Coddington, Craig McDean and fashion and creative director Sarah Richardson, Mario Sorrenti, Hugo Comte and Robbie Spencer, Richard Bush, actor Daniel Kaluuya photographed by Alasdair McLellan, and a special limited edition Peruvian Amazon rainforest cover by Laurence Ellis. The issue features the most fascinating minds of our times, among them: Roger Hallam, Peter Staley, Roxane Gay, Gloria Allred, Siri Hustvedt, Daniel Kaluuya, Marlon James, King Princess, Mj Rodriguez, Terry and Tricia Jones, Sarah Adelman, Frida Escobedo, Pedro Reyes, Damson Idris, and Adewale Akinnuoye.
Also featured in the issue: A visual essay from the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and the Barotseland region of Zambia; a look behind the curtain at Nelly Ben Hayoun’s University of the Underground; a lunar portfolio imagining life on the Moon featuring original designs by OMA, WORKac, Nike, Lexus, frog and more; an oral history on the fall of the Berlin Wall; an essay on the implications of the slow global transition to a cashless society; and a look back at Wet, the witty, oddball 1970s “gourmet bathing” magazine.
Continuing in Document’s tradition of publishing exclusive and original artist portfolios, the magazine is proud of present portfolios of works by Mitch Epstein, Francesco Vezzoli, Pope.L, Shawn Kuruneru, Hayv Kahraman, and Haegue Yang.
The issue will showcase more than 300 pages of fall fashion by Document collaborators Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo, Inez & Vinoodh with Grace Coddington, Mario Sorrenti and Sarah Richardson, Hugo Comte and Robbie Spencer, Craig McDean, Richard Bush, Buck Ellison and Shawn Lakin, Chris Rhodes and Alice Lefons, Danielle Neu and Jodie Barnes, Kristin Lee Moolman, Senta Simond and Camille Bidault-Waddington, Theo Sion and Alice Goddard.
