Henrik Falk är nygift med en arvtagerska till ett bensinmacksimperium, med ett barn på väg. Hon är överlycklig och i Henrik stiger paniken. Sedan hans familj hamnat på obestånd är hans självbild i gungning. Den en gång så självsäkre redarsonen är nu beroende av svärfaderns gillande för att komma framåt; att han arbetar duktigt inom familjeföretaget och är en god make till en kvinna han kanske egentligen föraktar. Så hör han ett rykte om att en konstnär har kommit tillbaka till staden och köpt hans barndomshem, det de tvingades sälja.
