Hunger is a biannual magazine from photographer and publisher, Rankin. Launched in November 2011 – 20 years after Dazed & Confused was founded, and 10 years after the birth of AnOther. – Hunger provides a new platform for uncompromised self-expression, innovation and discovery. Working with both experienced and emerging talents in the arts, fashion and editorial, Hunger seeks out cultural progression and distinction.

Cover Stars

Rankin shot all four cover stars for this issue. River Gallo, Celeste, Akala and Stephen Graham give us the lowdown of where they’re focusing their voices.

• River Gallo – writer-director and star of ‘Ponyboi’ talks intersex rights.
• Akala – the writer and rapper shares his thoughts on the responsibilities that come with having a public platform.

• Stephen Graham – fresh from the release of Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’, the actor talks navigating the movie industry and imposter syndrome.

• Celeste – the rising soul singer talks about the potential world-changing importance of kindness.

Inside Talent

The End of the F***ing World star’s Jessica Barden speaks about playing complex characters that match up to women in real life. London-based rapper Ashnikko is tackling big issues like sexual assault through her music. And we persuaded social media-shy H.E.R. to discuss why she chooses to concentrate her message in the music, rather than surrender to the cult of celebrity personality.

Fashion and Beauty

From #unibrowmovement’s Sophia Hadjipanteli’s brilliant beauty shoot, to Vicky Lawton’s masterclass with some of the biggest British rising stars – Malachi Kirby, Josh Whitehouse, Rose Williams, Molly Windsor, Karla Crome and Emma Appleton – it’s all here. Vicky also takes the season’s must-have Jimmy Choos club hopping. And we tempt supermodel canines out of their baskets all in the name of fashion. Naturally our issue wouldn’t be complete without the season’s collections – all with that signature Hunger twist.

Art and Documentary

We hit the galleries of the new Bilbao – Margate (yes, you read that right), where our guest art curators actor Russell Tovey and Robert Diament show art lovers what they’re missing. We hear from Yuri Suzuki, Haroon Mirza, Ima-Abasi Okon and Zoe Bedeaux too, about how sound features in their practice. For our Documentary section, London-based photographer Heather Glazzard discusses queer identity. We cover identity further with journalist Karen Cheung’s report from Hong Kong amid its current political turmoil. And documenting a more quiet form of crisis, Toby Binder lenses the youth of Belfast as the devastating effects of an uncertain, Brexit-induced future take their toll. We also give up our Speakers’ Corner section to four distinct voices, all with something to say.
